Style Snapshot: Nymphadora Tonks

You know how it is when you’re re-watching a movie you’ve already seen, and you suddenly hit the pause button and exclaim, “Why didn’t I see THAT before?” Well, when you’re a costume-phile like me, it tends to be sparked by a clothing ensemble you hadn’t previously zoomed in on.

So for today, a wee style “snapshot”, like those candid photos they used to take of people walking down the street during the 40s & 50s. This is Nymphadora (I know, she hates that name!) Tonks in Harry Potter: The Order of the Phoenix….

You see what I mean? Fantastic, no? I mean, what’s not to like here: we’ve got a grey ballerina mini-skirt with a bit of a white petticoat edging, black military-esque jacket with epaulettes, a menswear (?) vest, a pop of red from the shirt underneath, and a choker with bells on, as far as I can tell…. Oh, and violet hair! (Why didn’t she have colourful hair in the other films? Pout.)

Actually, Tonks exhibits a rather fabulous fashion sense throughout HP5 (but I will exempt the inexplicable mullet in #6).… Her style is a mixture of goth + grunge + waif, topped off with realistically chipped nail polish & a winningly cheeky attitude:

  1. Style snapshots — great idea! We have several of those street photos you mention in our family album. An Italian man named Foncie actually took millions of them from the 1930s to the 1970s on Granville Street in Vancouver. Nice photos and writeup in your post!

    • Thanks for your comments, Daisy! 🙂
I had heard of Foncie’s Photos, actually… they’re really neat! It’s too bad no one does street photography like that anymore (in this era of instant mobile-phone pics etc.), because I think there was something inimitable about those urban candids – a certain breezy “in-the-moment” feel that can’t be reproduced by a deliberate selfie. Ah, there I go “nostalging”!

    • Aw, thanks for checking in – that’s so nice! 🙂 Yes, I’m doing fine – I’ve just moved on to different projects for the moment, and rarely check this site anymore! (Hence the very delayed reply.)
I completely agree with you about Tonks: she definitely marches to her own drummer, which makes her a girl after my own heart! ❤
