Oscar’s Costume Pick: The Great Gatsby

Ah yes, the Oscars last night.

Honestly, despite my interest in movies and costumes, I don’t generally get too het up about the decadent, self-congratulatory parties of the very wealthy – of which the Oscars are perhaps the apex. However, a mention of the Best Costume winner, at least, seems apropos: Catherine Martin (in collaboration with Miuccia Prada, no less!), for The Great Gatsby.

When I went to see the movie in the theatre, I was stunned by the beauty of these costumes on the big screen. On top of that, I was surprised and impressed that the adaptation was so extraordinarily faithful to the novel (no Desolation of Smaug, aka Desecration of Tolkien, here, thank goodness! or thank Baz Luhrmann, anyway). It was very rewarding to see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece transcribed for the contemporary cinema with such evident respect for the text and such loving attention to detail. And the costumes are, frankly, just out-and-out gorgeous….
