Wardrobe Galleries: Jane Eyre (Golden-Brown Bonnet & Dress)

It is after Jane comes into her newfound inheritance that she finally acquires a new dress which is neither black nor grey, worn with a fancy bonnet and a patterned shawl. The dress is pretty enough, but the bonnet is really quite a lovely piece of work, all delicate golden laciness. Whether Jane Eyre in the book would actually ever have worn such a relatively elaborate outfit, given her self-confessed preference for “Quakerish” (her adjective) plain dress, is debatable… but it makes a beautiful screen costume, and draws a nice delineation between Jane in servitude, and Jane independent.
